DEVIOT TENNIS CLUB
STARTED SOME 100 YEARS AGO THIS YEAR

From the report below the resident committee responsible for the laying of the court would have been formed in the mid year of 1911 to have the court ready for use at Christmas time.

The following report was made to the Examiner Newspaper issued on
15 December 1911
 THE RURAL WORLD
Progress By Production
Among the Orchards
(4th  paragraph)
“While these developments of a commercial nature have been taking place, the residents have no overlooked the social side of life. A committee of the leading residents was formed, and a tennis club is the outcome. A very well laid down asphalt court has been built on the esplanade, and by Christmas will be available to its members for play. Now a move is being made to raise funds to build a hall for library and concert purposes. Altogether, things are moving at Deviot.”

The Examiner 10 December 1913
CLUB
“A most enjoyable afternoon was spent at the Deviot tennis court, when the president (Mr C.R. Burnside) issued invitations for an “at home,” the occasion being the opening of the season. A large number availed themselves of the invitation. Afternoon tea was served in a large marquee alongside the tennis pavilion. Various sets were arranged, and, judging from the form of some of the members, a hot time is in store for those who take part in the first challenge match. The Deviot court has now been in existence for about two years, and during that time improvements have been proceeding on all sides which now brings it up to date”
